A French Quarter Flair

A historic district home embraces New Orleans style

Evansville’s historic Southeast First Street offers up views of some of the most unique residential architecture found in the city.

“Walking down the brick street in the Downtown Historic Riverside District, a person can visualize living back in time,” says neighborhood resident Jessica Mcfarling.

Mcfarling and her family know firsthand the joy of living in the area — their French/Spanish inspired home along Southeast First Street showcases a New Orleans French Quarter vibe. Mcfarling purchased the home two years ago, and says its unique exterior features were a part of the big draw.

“There were several things that drew me to the home — the appearance, especially the balcony, the great location where you can walk to festivities Downtown, and the amount of room for a blended family with seven children,” she says.

It’s that French Quarter feel that influences her decorating choices. Since purchasing the home, Mcfarling and her family have done many updates both outside and inside. The exterior has been repainted and the lawn replaced. She also has planted perennials and trees through the gallery, porch, and front, side, and back yards to further pull on that New Orleans inspiration.

“A year ago, I was able to visit the French Quarter so I could take time to see the houses and pick up new ideas,” says Mcfarling. “It is a wonderful feeling to pull up to our home and see beautiful flowers in the spring or the fun decorations in the fall.”

And the neighborhood adds its own charm to her home.

“The neighborhood is filled with beautiful, friendly people who have been very welcoming to us. The diversity of food and people make it a wonderful place for people to visit and enjoy their time. We are very blessed to be a part of the Downtown Historic District,” she says.
