Battle of the Bands

Drum line competition returns for summer show
Drums on the Ohio brings the best of marching bands to Evansville to participate.

Eight drum and bugle corps from all over the nation will march into the River City for a heart-pounding night of musicianship at the annual Drums on the Ohio show at 7 p.m. June 29 at the F.J. Reitz Bowl.

The only Drum Corps International show in a 200-mile radius of Evansville, Drums on the Ohio has been showcasing young world-class musicians since 1978.

Originally sponsored by the Evansville Civitan Club, the show took a hiatus after 30 years. In 2013, it was brought back to its former glory when the F.J. Reitz Instrumental Music Boosters took over production.

Since 1978, the thunderous sound of marching drums along the river has filled the Reitz Bowl, an accidental stadium originally intended to be a retaining wall for F.J. Reitz High School on Dreier Boulevard. Nearly 4,000 spectators will descend to experience the show.

“This event encourages music education and community pride while providing a show like none other offered in our area,” says Chris Payne, marketing and sponsorship committee chair for the event. “The mission of Drums on the Ohio is to further music education across the Tri-State. We donate thousands of dollars (from proceeds) each year to local instrumental music programs, where it is used to give students exposure to music and fine arts education.”

Tickets for the show range from $15 general admission areas to $40 super premium seats.
