Christmas Cleanup

With the holiday season coming to a close, an oft-dreaded experience follows — undecorating your home and finding a way to dispose of your not-so-fresh Christmas tree and gift wrappings.

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility and Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve have the solutions.

The utility is offering its annual Christmas tree disposal service through Jan. 14. Place your tree next to your trash can at the curb on the day of your scheduled trash collection, and Republic Services will pick it up and take it to the landfill. The Christmas tree disposal service is only available to utility customers who pay for trash and recycling with their monthly water and sewer bill, and is not available to residents who live in apartment complexes, mobile home communities, outside city limits, or for retail, commercial, or business customers.

There is also an option for those who would rather have their tree recycled instead of taken to the landfill.

This Saturday, Jan. 8, Wesselman Woods is partnering with the Vanderburgh County Solid Waste District to host its annual Holiday Recycling event. Simply drop off your live Christmas tree at the old Walmart West Side shopping center at 4551 University Drive from 8 a.m. until noon, and Randy’s Tree Service will grind and mulch the trees at no cost. The VCSWD will also accept gift cards, cardboard boxes, and other recyclable materials, such as newspapers and aluminum cans.

The City of Henderson, Kentucky, is also offering live Christmas tree recycling at Newman Park through Feb. 1. Trees can be dropped off at the end of the southwest parking lot past the soccer complex; they will then be mulched and used on the Canoe Creek Nature Trail at the park.

In Warrick County, residents can recycle their fresh trees by dropping them off at the Warrick County Recycling and Resource Management District at 1111 S. Pelzer Road in Boonville, Indiana, during its regular business hours from 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m.
