Hot and Cold

Orange County gives visitors best of both worlds

When planning a winter trip, there is an ultimate decision to make — take advantage of snowy weather or escape the cold. An hour-and-a-half drive northeast of Evansville to Orange County, however, will take you to the best of both options.

▲ Open from December to mid-March (weather permitting), Paoli Peaks gives snow lovers a chance to brush up on their skiing, boarding, and tubing with trails for all skill levels.

At Paoli Peaks in Paoli, Indiana, guests can enjoy classic winter fun in the form of skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Beginning operation in 1978, the slopes opened in December for the 40th season. All levels of skiers and snowboarders can enjoy Paoli Peaks, and beginners are encouraged to learn the slopes through private and group lessons or the Snowmonsters class for young children.

“We have something for everyone, and we are a very beginner friendly resort,” says Sylvia Crick, director of marketing and administration for Paoli Peaks. “Tubing is a great option for those who enjoy winter but aren’t ready for the slopes yet.”

Crick also insists guests should not worry if it isn’t a particularly snowy winter. Paoli Peaks has 110 snow guns located throughout the property to ensure the slopes are ready for skiers, snowboarders, and tubers.

Just 15 minutes away from Paoli Peaks, those looking to warm up can head to Big Splash Adventure in French Lick, Indiana, for a splash at the 40,000-square-foot indoor waterpark. The retractable roof allows the park to operate year round and other activities like the Treasure Chest Arcade, laser tag, and indoor nine-hole and outdoor 18-hole mini-golf provide fun on dry land.

Big Splash Adventure also accommodates visitors in its family-friendly guest rooms and provides two days of waterpark use with a one-night stay.

“We offer so many activities to keep the family busy for a weekend,” says Audrey Brames, the director of marketing and sales for Big Splash Adventure. “It’s a great way to unplug and spend quality time with family.”
