Making an Impression

Nussmeier Engraving is etched in Evansville’s history
Steve Nussmeier and David Nussmeier are third generation co-owners of their family business, Nussmeier Engraving Co.

As Third Generation co-owners of Nussmeier Engraving Co., Steve Nussmeier and David Nussmeier have expanded and revamped the historic company and location.

Nussmeier Engraving was established in 1916 and at that time focused solely on engraving. The company then moved during the redevelopment of Downtown Evansville in 1969 to what is now its current location at 933 Main St. The structure is made up of three separate sections.

The front section of the building was added in 1969 and later was improved after enduring two severe roof leaks due to a storm in August 2012. The offices now have new ceilings, carpet, paint, and molding. They also showcase the many national awards the company has earned over its 98 years of service.

Finally, in 2007, Nussmeier added a warehouse that is attached to the back of the manufacturing plant.

“I don’t know what we would’ve done without that new area because we were starting to store stuff in aisles,” says David.

The company offers services in engraving, printing, foil stamping, embossing, die cutting, and designing. Some of its biggest clients in Evansville are Old National Bank, University of Evansville, Atlas Van Lines, Tropicana Evansville, Anchor Industries, and D-Patrick. Steve says roughly 75 percent of their work is for clients located outside of Evansville.

“We handle just about all the graphic printing processes you can do on paper,” David says, adding that the company also does lithoprocess printing and digital printing.

“We want to be the best printer that we can be, not just the best engraver,” David says. “For instance, we inspect everything that comes off a printing press, and a lot of people won’t do that. Among the reasons we are so good at printing and maintain a high quality is because we use the same procedures as we do for engraving.”

Engraving is a particularly specialized field, David says. And most of the prominent engraving printing houses reside in bigger cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

“Engraving is a very knowledge-based field, and not many people know how to do it,” says David. “We do a lot of printing, and we are competitive at it.”
