There are nine other cities named Evansville in the United States but only one named for Robert M. Evans — war hero, land developer, and brother-in-law of a U.S. Supreme Court justice.

He lent his name to a little river settlement with big dreams, founded in 1812. Our Evansville has evolved through the decades, but there remain quirks and qualities about the city that distinguish it. When natives say there is no place like home, they are talking about the elements that distinguish the city. Pick up a copy of Evansville City View for our list of some of the places and things that are Pure Evansville.

Eating deep fried goodness at the Fall Festival, sitting on Dress Plaza watching the fireworks and afternoons walking the trails at Wesselman Woods are Pure Evansville to me.

Evansville is a German community –– friendly, hard working, and loyal. More Southern than not and mostly ignored by the majority of the state. It is a great place to worship, to raise children, to educate and to experience life. But, most of all it is HOME.

One of the many things we love about Evansville and home is no matter where we go, we run into friends and people we know. It makes you feel so connected and HOME! If we lived in a major city, you could probably go weeks and not have this happen. Of course, on the down side, don't ever think you are going to run into the grocery for milk in grass-mowing clothes and not see someone that recognizes you!

Home of bar-b-que, Grippos’s potato chips, Garvin Park, baseball games, Thunder on the Ohio, the first indoor mall in Indiana (Washington Square), church burgoos, our Riverfront.

Pure Evansville is the sights, sounds, and smells of the Fall Festival. There is nothing like walking down Franklin Street eating something deep fried and/or chocolate dipped, reuniting with old friends, and watching the festival grow bigger and bigger each year.

Pure Evansville is the taste of the Hacienda margarita and the chips and salsa, and Turoni's house pizza! Nothing else comes close.

Pure Evansville is the entire West Side sitting in Reitz bowl cheering at the Mater Dei vs. Reitz football game.

Pure Evansville is sitting on the riverbank in the summer heat and humidity listening to the whine of the hydroplanes and watching the Blue Angels soar.

Pure Evansville is, in the words of my niece: “Lets go visit Heavensville!”
