The Farmhouse Charm is about sharing stories, whether it is the stories of the makers the shop carries, stories of its customers, or the story of owner Kiersten Stahl and her husband Brad who live, farm, and run the shop on their property located at 7212 Olmstead Road.
Stahl is a maker in her own right, making T-shirts, greeting cards, decorative signs, and other items, and began selling her products at the Newburgh Farmers Market. The store space, open since December 2016, was going to serve as a workshop where she could create, but Stahl also wanted to support other local artisans.
“That’s one of our main focuses, that we have a lot of handcrafted products local to Evansville and throughout the U.S.,” she says. “It kind of grew from there and turned into a full-fledged little store.”
From candles by a maker in New York and coffee supplied by Indiana-based JavAroma and local Proper Coffee to bath products from several Evansville natives, The Farmhouse Charm offers truly handpicked and handcrafted items.
“We wanted people to be able to experience it, not just see things,” says Stahl. “That’s why we burn the candles and brew the coffee. We wanted people to be able to try them.”
As part of the experience offered at The Farmhouse Charm, customers can participate in various classes and events from a string art class taught by Stahl to “Meet the Maker” events where local artisans bring more of their inventory to the store and interact with shoppers. From May to October, the shop hosts Market Days on the property that function like a mini farmers market with various vendors, giveaways, and children’s activities.
“We love to share those things with them, and I think it gives them more reason to shop with us,” says Sandra Briody, a sales associate at the store and a long-time friend of Stahl’s. “They have lots of choices, so we’re always really thankful when they come in here and shop with us.”
“I think that is one of my favorite things I didn’t even imagine would happen,” says Stahl. “We have become such good friends with so many of our customers. We know them by name, we know their kids, we know what’s going on in their lives. That has been such a blessing.”
