Events celebrating America’s semiquincentennial are not just confined to July 4. Throughout the year, museum exhibitions, military re-enactments, and guest speakers across the region spotlight how the U.S. has evolved since 1776.
Pieces of the Past: America at 250 Years
Through Oct. 4, Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science
Start at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science, whose “Pieces of the Past: America at 250 Years” synchronizes Evansville’s milestones with those of America. In a timeline combining the museum’s permanent collections across its specialties, color-coded artifacts walk visitors through Evansville’s last two centuries and localize America’s story. Key items on display include a painting by Georgia O’Keeffe, prints by Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana, a letter written by city namesake Robert Evans, an amputation kit from the Civil War, a 1950s flight suit, the heat shield core of Gemini III, a foam panel from Apollo I, and a COVID-19 vaccine vial.
Speak Lecture Series: Patrick Griffin

University of Notre Dame history Professor Patrick Griffin presents “The Revolutionary War in Three Paintings,” ranging from colonial portraits to scenes of Irish and British culture. Griffin shares insights that link the people and cultures on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

This self-guided tour includes viewing Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of George Washington at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art, Thomas Hart Benton’s iconic murals “The Social History of Indiana” at Indiana University’s Auditorium, and “The Declaration of Independence: The Motives, The Moment” — which includes an original Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration printed on July 4, 1776 — at the Lilly Library.

America 250 Juried Art Exhibit

From landscapes and landmarks to family traditions, this juried exhibition of 2D and 3D artwork depicts what the creators love most about their home country.
250 Years of Valor: From the Ground to the Stars
Oct. 24, Old National Events Plaza
Recounting the aftermath of America’s space race, astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson shares stories of his five Space Shuttle missions between 1984 and 1995, as well as his five years as NASA’s Chief of the Astronaut Office, at this gala for the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Wall That Heals
Oct. 29-Nov. 1, University of Southern Indiana
A motorcycle escort ushers into town this traveling three-fourths-scale replica of Washington, D.C.’s Vietnam War Memorial dedicated to the 58,281 service members lost in the conflict. Open to the public, the exhibit also accommodates private visits from Vietnam War veterans 24 hours a day.
A mobile education center joins the exhibit.
Americana at the Symphony
Nov. 14, Carson Center for the Performing Arts, Paducah, Kentucky
The Marcus Roberts Trio — made up of pianist Marcus Roberts, drummer Jason Marsalis, and bassist Rodney Jordan — takes a jazzy approach to American musical standards.
