Food for the Soul

In a year of historic moments, it seems the weather of winter 2021 wants to make its own mark in the history books with record-lows and snow and ice storms across the Tri-State as well as across the country. As residents hunker down in their homes with blankets, heaters, and hopefully no plans that involve driving on the treacherous roads, I got to thinking of my favorite winter treat — soup!

A chunky stew full of meat and vegetables or the classic broth of chicken noodle, the rich, heart-warming taste of soup is what every Evansvillian needs to fill up their soul and bring a little sun to these grey winter days.

Check out these local restaurants currently serving my favorite easily-personalized winter dish!

1) Jason’s Deli

The best thing about soup is its diversity, something Jason’s Deli at 943 N. Green River Road knows all about. From their creamy broccoli cheese made with real cheddar to thick and tender chicken pot pie and everything in between, the regional deli chain offers 12 soup options for everyone in the family.

2) Vietnamese Cuisine

Located at 4602 Vogel Road across the road from Eastland Mall, Vietnamese Cuisine is Evansville’s hidden gem for all things authentic — including soup! Pho, a traditional Vietnamese soup is made up of a light broth, rice noodles, herbs, and your choice of protein and extras. Open for dine in and carry out, the restaurant offers seafood, chicken, beef, and hot and sour pho daily.

3) Lic’s Deli and Ice Cream

While we aren’t exactly craving choco creams or sundaes during this cold front, Lic’s Deli and Ice Cream lives up to the deli in its name with a succinct list of soups on the menu. With locations across the city, everyone has access to their rotating soup of the day. Not a soup person? We didn’t forget about you! Lic’s is best known for its flavorful chili served spicy or plain with your choice of crackers, shredded cheese, a bread bowl, or complete your order with a grilled cheese sandwich.
