To a beef-loving chili traditionalist, vegetarian chili may sound like blasphemy. But with a hearty helping of beans and seasonings, the spicy black bean chili at Zoup! Fresh Soup Company is a tasty, meatless variation on a favorite winter warm-up. The thick chili aces the “spoon test,” and you won’t miss the meat, says franchise owner Nooshin Mehrnia of Newburgh: “The taste is like a beef chili.”
Green chilies and chili seasonings pack just the right amount of heat, and this chili ($3.75-$5.50 for sizes ranging from eight to 16 ounces; includes bread) delivers a nutritional punch, too. An eight-ounce serving contains just two grams of fat and 11 grams of fiber.
Every day, Zoup! serves a rotating selection of a dozen soups, plus salads and sandwiches. (Evansville’s Zoup! opened at 6240 E. Virginia St. on the East Side late last year and is the Michigan-based chain’s first Indiana restaurant.)
