As the U.S. turns 250 years old this summer, celebrations are taking place across the country. Nowhere is this more evident than in Williamsburg, Virginia, given its position at the heart of American history.
“Williamsburg isn’t just part of American history, it helped shape it,” says Selena Coles, public relations specialist for Visit Williamsburg. “As the capital of Virginia from 1699 to 1780, Williamsburg was a political and cultural hub where revolutionary ideas took root. It’s where leaders debated independence, where pivotal moments unfolded, and where Virginia moved toward breaking from British rule. Today, it sits at the heart of Virginia’s ‘Historic Triangle’ (Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown), telling the full story, from the first English settlement to the final victory of the American Revolution.”
Throughout the year, visitors can stop in at several historic sites that played a role in America’s birth. This includes Colonial Williamsburg, a more than 300-acre living history museum with restored buildings, trades, and reenactors; Jamestown Settlement, where America’s first permanent English colony began; and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, which offers immersive storytelling of the Revolutionary War.
A great start is “The Flame of Revolution: 5th VA Convention” May 15-16 at Colonial Williamsburg. This live theatrical performance revisits the Fifth Virginia Convention during which the issue of declaring independence was debated. During Memorial Day weekend, join a discussion about loyalty, liberty, and the collapse of British authority during “Talk of the Town 1774.” On Memorial Day, the schedule starts with a commemoration honoring the men and women of the U.S. military who sacrificed their lives in defending their country.
July 4’s Celebration at Colonial Williamsburg is a highlight of the year. “This is the centerpiece event of the entire 250th celebration,” Coles says. “Visitors can expect historic reenactments and readings of founding documents [as well as] performances, concerts, and costumed interpreters. Fireworks and even modern drone shows light up historic streets, and there will be immersive experiences along Duke of Gloucester Street, the same place where Revolution-era decisions happened.”
At the Yorktown Victory Celebration Oct. 17-18, mark America’s momentous 1781 Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown with artillery firings, exhibits, and interpretive programs. Learn about military life and tactics as well as see a day in the life of a Revolution-era farming family.
“Williamsburg offers access to some of the most important historic sites in America,” Coles says. “Together, these sites let visitors walk through the entire origin story of the United States.”
Given its rich history as a cornerstone in the birth and development of the U.S., Virginia offers many historic cities beyond the Historic Triangle with notable America 250 celebrations. June 12-14, “Sails on the Potomac” highlights Alexandria’s role in helping construct the foundation of the Revolution via a collection of tall ships, exhibits, live music, and more events.
Opening in July at Mount Vernon, “George Washington: A Revolutionary Life” examines the path of the man who became our country’s first president through artifacts, exhibits, and immersive displays.
In Charlottesville through July 31, visitors can take part in “Jefferson Remembers the Declaration,” a guided theatrical experience at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello that examines the Declaration of Independence, its creation, and how it shaped the formation of a new nation.
Considering a visit to Williamsburg for America’s 250th?
Start planning now and allow plenty of time to explore. “This is a big year for Williamsburg, so planning ahead is key,” Coles says. “Williamsburg will draw a lot of people, especially July 4. To get the most out of your visit, we would advise visitors to book tickets and lodging early, arrive early for major events (especially fireworks and reenactments), and mix big events with quieter experiences (like museum visits or walking tours).”
