Oktoberfest celebrations may traditionally end the first weekend of October, but you can still find festive German cuisine at Knob Hill Tavern, 1016 Hwy 662 West, Newburgh, Indiana, through the end of this month.
Unveiling its Oktoberfest menu for the 30th consecutive year, Knob Hill Tavern drives German heritage home, with 16 appetizers, sandwiches, dinners, desserts, and even an Oktoberfest pizza.
“It helps business pick up in October, which would be slow otherwise because it gets cold outside and we close the terrace seating,” says co-owner Karson Kollker. “It’s been a good thing for us.”
Start your meal off with all-in-one bites of classic German kraut balls or grab an appetizer platter including German bologna, Braunschweiger (smoked minced pork sausage), Sommerwurst (a hard summer sausage), and pepper cheese.
For dinner, try Knob Hill Tavern’s Sauerbraten — tender sliced beef, marinated for five days in an apple cider vinegar and red wine gravy — or its newest addition to this year’s menu, the Schweineschnitzel, a fried pork loin smothered with mushroom gravy.
Pair any of these dishes with one of the tavern’s famous fishbowl draft beers, and you’re doing Oktoberfest in style.
To finish off, try Knob Hill’s rich German chocolate cake or apple strudel with vanilla ice cream.
“We add and take off things every year, but the majority of the menu stays intact,” says Kollker. “I enjoy everything on it.”
If you’re not in the mood for Oktoberfest fare, you can still order from Knob Hill’s regular menu year-round, including its famous catfish fiddlers.
