Walking in through the front doors of Fourth Street Accounting Solutions, you would not guess the office was home to an accounting firm. With natural light beaming from the open skylight, gargoyles perched on top of walls, and umbrellas over desks, this innovative workspace allows the payroll-processing firm to succeed while maintaining a light-hearted atmosphere.
The first elements to catch the eye are umbrellas over the desks. Logan Miller, vice president of business development, says they serve to shield the light coming through the skylight, an original element of the building.
“If you didn’t have the umbrellas, you could get a tan sitting at those desks,” Miller says. “Working in the sunlight is nice, but the umbrellas also help to see the computer screen better.”
The open floor plan, walled in by the original exposed brick, provides for a conducive, communicative work environment. Kenneth Ross, president and CEO, says the open space allows employees to ask questions and solve problems more efficiently.
Previously in the old Landmark building on N.W. Fourth Street, Ross moved the company in 1999, and completely renovated and refurbished the space. They tried to keep as many original components of the building as possible to retain the character, he says.
The building was constructed in the early 1900s and was home to several different auto shops before Fourth Street Solutions. Ross says he took on a big project when he moved, but the space allows the company to better serve clients in 13 states across the country.
With large plants beneath the skylight, and visits from the company mascot, Daisy the bulldog, the space fits the company.
“I do think we are different than other accounting firms, and you could draw parallels to the office environment and the type of company we are,” says Miller. “We always have tried to be a true partner to our clients, and our culture and environment reflect that.”
