Sewing with Sass

“Stupid Dishes.” “Good Things Come to Those Who Bake.” “I’m Sorry for What I Said When I was Hungry.”

Cooks can add a little laughter to their kitchens with local artisan Lydia Fulp’s handmade home décor that features these witty sayings and more. Her Evansville-based business, Hat & Rabbit, offers an array of items, “handmade with love,” from vintage-inspired tea towels to rustic throw pillows.

“They are a little sassy and cute,” says Fulp. “A lot of people find them relatable.”

The Evansville native, who was taught to sew by a Sunday school teacher and spent much of her childhood behind a sewing machine, says her whimsical towels are a customer favorite. The tea towels are made of osnaburg muslin, a durable, lightweight, coarsely woven cotton fabric, with vintage fabric borders.

“I chose osnaburg muslin because it’s 100-percent cotton and really absorbent,” she says, adding she finds materials online, at auctions, and at the local fabric store Let’s Sew.

Fabrics, especially floral prints, inspire Fulp’s designs, from her vintage-influenced line to custom items. Some of her most popular custom items are personalized towels and pillows for wedding gifts.

“People reach out to me on Facebook or Instagram. They tell me what they want, we bounce ideas back and forth, and I make it for them,” explains Fulp.

Hat & Rabbit’s handcrafted items are available at River City Mercantile in Downtown Evansville, The Refinery in downtown Newburgh, Indiana, as well as through its online store at, and this summer at the Franklin Street Bazaar.

Fulp also collaborates with local partners, recently creating hats to be sold at River City Mercantile, and helping design a market tote bag for Evansville Design Group, a nonprofit promoting education and networking among the local design community.

Look for even more from Hat & Rabbit this summer, as Fulp plans to expand her lines of embroidery hoop wall art and canvas tote bags — sure to be sassy and cute, of course.
