There’s fun afoot this weekend, with a carnival, art and plants shows, and a tribute to Aretha.

It’s opening weekend for the Evansville Otters. Starting Friday, you can enjoy Frontier League baseball as the Otters take on the Washington, Pennsylvania, Wild Things. Bring your pup to the ballpark Sunday for the season’s first Dog Days of Summer!

John H. Castle Elementary School Spring Family Carnival
5:30-8:30 p.m. May 11
John. H. Castle Elementary School, 3077 Highway 261, Newburgh, Indiana
Organized by the Castle school system’s Parent Teacher Organization, this event will feature carnival games, inflatables, and Papa John’s pizza and drinks. Admission is $5 for individuals and free for children under age four.

A is for Animals Opening Reception
5-8 p.m. May 12
The Rumjahn Gallery and Framery, 5901 Vogel Road
This series of paintings by Evansville native Shane Hickrod references mid-century children’s book illustrators. The opening reception includes wine, beer, and hors d’oeuvres.

Dr. Jill’s Daylily and Plant Sale
9 a.m.-1 p.m. May 13
Village East Animal Hospital Parking Lot, 1305 S. Green River Road
Rain or shine, shop more than 50 varieties of daylilies to benefit local animal rescues. A double fan of daylilies is $4, with three for $10. Sales are cash only.

Downtown Evansville Sidewalk Sale
9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 13
Downtown Evansville, Main Street from Second to Sixth Streets
Visit the booths of more than 100 shops, makers, vendors, and community members. There will also be a photo opportunity and free carnations for Mother’s Day. This event is free to attend.

Navigation: The Art of Finding Yourself

Learn how to know where you are in the world any time – literally and figuratively. Admission is $12 for attendees over age 14 and free for those younger.

Flower Fest 2023

Kiwi’s Garden Center, 100 N. First Ave.
Find annuals, hanging baskets, vegetables, herbs, tropical, planters, gardening supplies, and more. There also will be food trucks, face painting, a photo spot, and potting bar.

Aretha: A Tribute
7 p.m. May 13
Victory Theatre, 600 Main St.
Pay tribute to the one and only Queen of Soul featuring Broadway powerhouse Capathia Jenkins and Grammy-nominated R&B singer Ryan Shaw. Tickets start at $30.

Metro Ballroom Dance Club Community Dance
7:30-10 p.m. May 13
Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 300 Court St.
Start with a beginner Cha-Cha lesson at seven and then start dancing to a mix of classic and modern music for open dancing with D.J. Scott Key. Admission is $10 per guest and cash only for nonmembers.
