A Fried Food Feast

The 99th annual West Side Nut Club Fall Festival might be cancelled this year, but that doesn’t mean you have to forgo all your favorite Fall Fest flavors. Let these local restaurants transport you back to the days of a crowded, food-filled Franklin Street.

The sampler platter at Hawg ‘N’ Sauce, 6580 Leonard Road, Mount Vernon, IN, will check off everything fried — breaded mushrooms, cheddar cheese cubes, fried pickle spears, onion rings, corn nuggets, and mozzarella sticks.

Zaps Tavern, 3725 St. Phillips Road, Mount Vernon, IN, will satisfy your West Side cravings with their chicken wings tossed in West Side Rub and dipped in Zapski sauce made from Ski soda.

The Elote Lobster Corn Dog at Amy’s on Franklin, 1418 W. Franklin St., with a 4-ounce Maine lobster tail, cornmeal batter, aioli, feta cheese, ancho chili powder, and cilantro, is the perfect upscale version of a classic corn dog.

Head to Bud’s Rockin’ Country Bar & Grill, 2124 W. Franklin St., for the BBQ Sundae (left) — a fishbowl piled with smoked pork, baked beans, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, Bud’s barbecue sauce, and served with coleslaw.

Resurrection Catholic Church, 5301 New Harmony Road, isn’t letting the Fall Fest cancellation keep them from serving their handmade chicken and dumplings, kuchens, and pizza the first week of October in the church’s parking lot.

Wash down all those savory items with a refreshing lemon shake-up from Hoosier Burger Co., 325 S. Green River Road.

For the cherry on top, Big Top Drive-In, 1213 W. Maryland St., dishes out chocolate-covered cherries and bananas.
